ROME, May 10 (Xinhua) -- Italy on Monday reported 5,080 new coronavirus infections -- down from 8,292 new infections on Sunday, bringing total active infections to 373,670, according to the latest data from the Ministry of Health.

The country's death toll rose by 198 to 123,031, while recoveries increased by 15,063 to 3,619,586, according to the ministry.

Of the active infections, 356,085 people are quarantined at home with light or no symptoms, 15,427 are hospitalized with symptoms and another 2,158 are hospitalized in intensive care -- up by 80 ICU hospitalizations compared to Sunday.

A majority of the infected people, or 84,584, are in the southern Campania region whose capital is Naples. The second highest number of infections, or 43,461, are in the southern Puglia region located in the heel of Italy's boot.

According to the ministry, Health Minister Roberto Speranza on May 7 signed an order designating which regions fall into which color-coded zone, with the new rules going into effect on Monday and lasting for two weeks. Seventeen out of Italy's 20 regions are now in the yellow zone, meaning that most social and economic activities are permitted.

The remaining three regions -- Valle d'Aosta, Sicily, and Sardinia -- are in the orange zone, where anti-virus rules include a 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. curfew and a ban on travel outside one's municipality; bars and restaurants can operate until 6 p.m., but they can only serve take-aways.

In a bid to contain the second wave of the pandemic, the Italian government late last year divided the country into three color-coded areas: yellow or low risk, orange or medium risk, and red or high risk, with varying restrictions according to the level of transmission of the virus.

Over the weekend, Speranza also signed a new ordinance allowing families to visit their loved ones in nursing homes.

Italy has so far vaccinated just over 24 million of its 60 million inhabitants, according to the latest data from the ministry.
