PERTH, Western Australia - A 34-year-old Perth woman faced Perth Magistrates Court on Tuesday, accused of assaulting Australian Federal Police (AFP) officers at Perth Airport following an alleged incident on a flight from Sydney.

The AFP says it was called to meet the plane at Perth Airport on Monday night after receiving a request for assistance when a passenger became disruptive and refused to follow crew instructions during the flight. Upon arrival, officers escorted the woman from the aircraft, but she allegedly tried to walk away while disembarking.

It is further alleged that when officers attempted to restrain her, the woman pulled away, striking one officer's forearm with a pen she had hidden under her clothing. A second officer who intervened was allegedly hit in the face and neck with the pen.

The woman was arrested on the tarmac. An ambulance was called for the injured officers, and one was taken to Royal Perth Hospital, spending the night under medical care before being released on Tuesday morning.

The woman has been charged with:

  • Two counts of causing harm to a Commonwealth public official (maximum penalty 13 years' imprisonment),
  • One count of obstructing a Commonwealth public official (maximum penalty two years' imprisonment),
  • One count of failing to comply with cabin crew safety instructions (maximum penalty a fine of up to $13,750).

AFP Acting Commander Murray Taylor said the AFP, alongside its airport security partners, does not tolerate violence or disruptive behavior.

"The AFP and its partners have zero tolerance for antisocial, violent or dangerous behaviour towards passengers, staff or law enforcement at our airports, and we will take action against those who offend," Acting Commander Taylor said.
"Passengers expect to feel safe while travelling and should not have to witness intoxication, violence or bad behaviour. While our members acknowledge there is a certain element of risk to their role, the AFP will not tolerate any harm caused to members while performing their duties to keep travellers, airline and airport staff safe," an AFP statement issued Tuesday said.

A Jetstar spokesperson reminded passengers of the importance of following all safety instructions and procedures while on board, including fastening seatbelts for landing.

"We will never tolerate disruptive behaviour onboard our aircraft or within the terminal and appreciate the ongoing assistance and support of the AFP," the spokesperson said.

The matter was adjourned for a future court date.
